FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH
At the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion (MPI for Chemical Energy Conversion), we find ways of efficiently converting energy into storable and usable forms. Here, we are above all searching for suitable catalysts for the necessary chemical reactions. Generally speaking, the industry is attempting to save CO2 through avoidance measures and the industry here in Germany is already using minimal carbon in its work. However, complete avoidance is not possible. With Carbon2Chem®, we are developing a modular principle for these industries, which can be used to generate modules to implement the energy transition.

APPLIED RESEARCH
As an institute whose motto is “production without raw materials”, we fit perfectly into this project. For several years, the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety, and Energy Technology UMSICHT has been conducting research in projects that have aimed to further reduce both CO2 emissions and the extraction of fossil fuels, and instead work with “waste products” such as the steel mill gases that inevitably arise in steel production, in order to use them to produce chemicals such as methanol. This is why we want to keep carbon in the loop with Carbon2Chem® so that, once it is created in steel production, it is sustainably reused on site rather than being released.

INDUSTRY
thyssenkrupp is performing pioneering work here as the first industrial company alongside science and other partners from industry. We are not concerned here with an individual solution, but rather a kit of solutions that can also be used by other steel mills and industries. In the end, it should be possible to connect all of the technology modules with each other. We are conducting the first application on an industrial scale in the steel sector – a very CO2-intensive industrial sector. In doing so, we are conducting preliminary work in an industrial environment so that we can also expand the modules to other industrial sectors. Which also benefits us as a diversified corporate group.
