Development of substrate-based mushroom materials

Your challenge: Developing fungal material as a sustainable resource

Whether in the construction, automotive or packaging industry: Mushroom material – also known as mycelium material – is a bio-based material with the potential to implement resource and climate protection in sustainable products and at the same time drive forward the bioeconomy. The biggest challenge for the industry is often the basic material handling. This includes both production, shaping and functionalization as well as the provision of suitable infrastructure. In addition, many companies ask themselves the question: Are mushroom materials suitable for our applications and how can this new class of materials be developed?

To classify: The fungi feed on a specific substrate and thus form the basis for the product. In the spirit of a circular economy, a wide variety of plant residues can be used as the basis for the specially prepared substrate. The fungus grows through the substrate and stabilizes it. The fungus then dies off through drying and the material can be further functionalized. This symbiosis of substrate and fungus, their processing and functionalization must be optimized specifically for the application.

Our solution: Bringing mushroom-based materials into application

Our team with expertise in process engineering, biology and mechanical engineering supports you in identifying options for fungi-based materials for your applications, creating the basis for specific product development at and opening up new markets. Specifically, we support you with the following topics:

  • Prototype construction incl. mold construction technology
  • Substrate development
    • Substrate selection
    • Recipe creation
    • Selection of mushroom species
    • Production of substrate-based mycelium materials
  • Functionalization
    • Post- or pre-growth phase, e.g. for fire protection, sound insulation or thermal insulation
    • Substrate development with functional additives
    • Post-processing and functionalization of finished components
  • Specialist input
    • Specialist workshops
    • Lectures
    • Feasibility studies

Your benefits:

  • A mycelium technology center with a high-performance infrastructure for material handling, growth and prototype construction
  •  scientifically sound introduction to mushroom-based materials
  • Neutral advice and evaluation of the potential for your application
  • Accompanying material characterization

How to work with us

Depending on your question and your requirements, it may be possible to commission our institute directly with the development of solutions. We will discuss which of our value propositions in the field of mushroom-based materials development we can help your company with. The size of the company is irrelevant: we support small companies just as professionally with research and development services as clients from medium-sized companies or DAX companies.

Depending on the scope and requirements, we can create tailor-made prototypes for you, produce a suitable substrate, functionalize the mushroom-based material and also train your staff specifically in handling the material. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us: We offer you a non-binding initial consultation.
