Binding CO2 in building materials

Your challenge: Reducing CO2 emissions and demonstrating sustainability

How can CO2 emissions in the building materials industry be reduced? This is one of the key challenges currently facing manufacturers and users of cement, concrete and other materials. After all, it is important both to counteract the effects of climate change and to meet customer demand for sustainable materials. At the same time, there are signs of rising costs for CO2 emissions and new EU directives that link public procurement to mandatory CO2 targets. Take Denmark, for example, where the CO2 limits for new buildings have been tightened.

Our solution: Processes and products for binding CO2 in building materials

With our help, you can achieve negative CO2 emissions: We are working on processes and products to bind CO2 in building materials. Our services include

  • Development of processes for the direct integration of CO2 in mineral building materials through carbonation
  • Development of innovative processes for the integration of CO2 capture and recycling of construction waste
  • Production of calcium carbonate through the use of CO2-rich process gases and calcium-containing material streams – including the recovery of building sands
  • We offer unique technical equipment in the field of carbon dioxide as a process medium, ranging from small plants with a volume of 63 ml to PLC-controlled plants on a technical scale with a volume of 1700 liters. Scaling up the developed processes is part of our range of services and is possible on site, including the necessary analytics to characterize the CO2 incorporation.

You see a need for research or development or have become aware of a promising Fraunhofer technology: For example, your company wants to bring a material or product innovation to the market, have an internal production process evaluated and improved or respond to an anticipated market demand as quickly as possible.. Then it makes sense to commission our institute directly with the development of solutions for your challenge. Together, we will clarify the framework conditions for how we can successfully advance your company with our expertise and infrastructure. The size of your company is irrelevant: our teams support small companies just as professionally with research and development services as clients from SMEs or companies that are listed on the stock exchange.

Several partners along a value chain work together on a solution – usually within the framework of public funding. We can build on a large network from industry, research, society and the Fraunhofer Institutes. We are experienced both in the selection of funding programs and in project applications, contribute innovative ideas to the process and then shape the transfer to the market together with you and other partners.

NuKoS

Utilization of carbon dioxide in slags

Slags from steel production are to be processed for further use with the aid of CO2. The aim is to use the slags to produce higher-value products for the construction, plastics and paper industries.

ZEROES

Climate-neutral building materials as CO2 sink

The ZEROES project aims to utilize biogenic carbon from organic residues for the production of concrete and masonry blocks. The integration of CO2 in building materials offers the potential to pave the way for a climate-neutral construction industry.
