The Fraunhofer lighthouse project "Electricity as a resource" was launched in 2015 with the aim of developing electrochemical processes that can be used to produce important raw materials for the chemical industry in a climate-neutral manner.

Power-to-x processes are needed to use CO2 as a sustainable raw material. ElkaSyn therefore focuses on a one-step process in which carbon dioxide and water are converted to methanol, ethanol, propanol and butanol.

The transformation from a linear to a circular plastics economy can only succeed with a multi-stakeholder approach. The Fraunhofer Cluster of Excellence Circular Plastics Economy CCPE combines the competencies of six institutes of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and co-operates closely with partners from industry. Together, they work on systemic, technical and social innovations and keep an eye on the entire life cycle of plastic products.
