Volta-X 2025

This year, we are represented at Volta-X in Stuttgart: At the trade fair stand of the Fraunhofer Energy Alliance, we present services and solutions around the industrialization of electrolysis. In focus: a seal-free PEM electrolysis stack.

Electrolysis is considered a key technology for the climate-neutral transformation of our energy system: It enables the production of green hydrogen from renewable energy and contributes to the reduction of CO₂ emissions. However, electrolysis still has a number of hurdles to overcome on the road to industrialization – including the costs of its production.

This is where Fraunhofer UMSICHT comes in: We are working on a seal-free stack design for PEM electrolysis based on composite bipolar films from our own calendering process. It is to be manufactured exclusively from thermoplastic cell components (bipolar foils, frame elements, membrane electrode unit) and using conventional joining processes (laser or ultrasonic welding). This will make it possible to replace hundreds of sealing surfaces in the electrolysis stack with robust welds and save costs.
